The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) announced on Monday morning, September 7, 2026, that it had ambushed a joint patrol of the Malian Army and the Russian Africa Corps near Kaka, in the Mopti region of central Mali.
The group said the ambush targeted the patrol while it was moving through the area, causing casualties among the targeted forces.
Following the attack, JNIM published images that it said showed several Russian mercenaries killed during the ambush, as well as scenes from the site of the attack and the damage caused.
The attack comes amid a resurgence of armed operations in central Mali, particularly in the Mopti and Ségou regions, where Malian forces and their allies, including Russian mercenaries and Dozo militias, have faced repeated attacks and ambushes by JNIM.
